offers story time for children of all
ages every
Tuesday at 10:30 am.
Our library's story times are informal programs that focus primarily on books. Occasionally the librarian will feel intrepid and sing a song or get the kids to dance or help with rhymes. Volunteer readers are often featured and they are appreciated by all. Selected books vary from educational to whimsical, but all of them help build literacy skills. Story time children build the six skills they need to learn to read:
Not only that, but story
time is a great time to build
social skills! The laid-back atmosphere means your temperamental
two-year old will be welcome even on her grumpiest days.
You'll be surprised how fast the other kids role model proper library behavior as they play together with puzzles and toys in the sunny children's area. And it's a great place and time to meet other parents, check out parenting resources, and browse for books, videos, CDs, and magazines for yourself and other members of your family. Ready to Read in Roslyn Ready
to Read in Roslyn is an early literacy program of the
Roslyn
Library that aims to help develop pre-reading skills in young children,
thus preparing them for success in school and beyond.
The program launched in 2008 with a storytelling and book giveaway event for area preschool children. This initial event and the launch of the program was made possible by a grant from the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation through the Washington State Library. Matching funds were provided by the Cle Elum Kiwanis with supporting funds from the Friends of the Roslyn Library. Later, the Roslyn Library held a special series of story times for children between 1 and 2 years old, developed by Dr. James Thomas, that provided parents and caregivers with resources and guidance to help their children get ready to read and learn while their children learn and have fun with one another. Since 2010, the program has provided book bag giveaways for new babies born in the area. Bags include board books and information about early literacy, along with information about library resources for parents and their children. The program is sponsored by the Friends of the Roslyn Library. The Summer Reading Program Click here to view photos from the 2012 Summer Reading Program. summer, the Roslyn
Library holds a reading program that aims
to keep kids of all ages reading throughout the summer months. The
program offers incentive prizes for time spent reading, a raffle for
completing reading goals, and features
weekly story
times, activities and events.
The 2012 theme was Dream Big, Read and kids read and learned about things of the night, such as dreams, astronomy, nocturnal animals, even mythical night monsters, like zombies and vampires. 24 kids reached their reading goal and collectively read for 247 hours in 2012, and we had 281 attendees at 8 science and craft programs.
The World Affairs
Program provides the
opportunity for our community to engage with other cultures.
Professionals from across
the globe visit Roslyn and share with us their culture and perspectives
of the issues that we all face as part of the human race.
Each gathering is different, from a Q&A presentation by Sudanese health workers to a reception at the Roslyn Brewery for a group of young, emerging leaders from various countries in Europe to an informal dinner that provided an opportunity for citizen diplomacy with a group of international professionals from the UW's Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program. This series is made possible through a partnership with the World Affairs Council. To view pictures of the different World Affairs Series programs, click here. The One Book One County program is a once a year, county-wide program that encourages everyone in our community to read and talk about the same book. Copies of the selected book for the year are available to borrow from the city libraries. Community members are encouraged to read the book, then the libraries host programming throughout the month of March that relates to the themes that emerge from reading the book. It all makes for people spending more time reading a good book and more time talking to their friends and neighbors about the issues the book brings up. The One Book One Community Program is sponsored by The Friends of the Roslyn Library. The Armchair Travel Series
features the adventures of local residents, from solo wilderness
excursions
out our very own back door to guided tours to the Galapagos Islands.
Every presentation features photographs and stories, often accompanied
by samples of the food, drink and crafts of the region visited. Every
presentation is completely different. Best of all, it doesn't cost a
dime. You don't even need a passport! Call the library at (509)
649-3420 for upcoming presentations.
A group of stitchers meets every Monday at 5:00 pm at the library. Some people are working on their own crocheting or knitting projects, embroidering, hand-sewing, even making rag rugs. Others want to learn or RE-learn how to stitch. Other times, the group decides on a project they can all work on together, such as the dish scrubbers they crocheted one year. Either way, its a great way to motivate yourself to start or finish a project, to learn a new craft, to relax, and to meet and chat with others. Participation slacks off in summer, but picks up again in the fall and winter months, especially just before the holidays. Join in anytime. |
